A very belated happy new year - I got sick right before New Years and I've been shuffling my way thru a sinus infection ever since :( But! There is Yuletide to sustain me.

I wrote one fic:

Summoning
Fandom: Bartimaeus Trilogy
Rating: gen
Characters: Nathaniel, Bartimaeus, Kitty Jones
Wordcount: 1600ish
Summary:
Nathaniel returns to the land of the living. There are, however, a few conditions.

A fix-it for the Bartimaeus trilogy. These are Good Books and I really do love the more tragic/melancholy ending... But I crave chaotic cheerful trios so. Here you are.

And! I got Wimsey fic!

The Convoluted Conundrum of the Poached Rabbit by curtaincall
Fandom: Peter Wimsey
Rating: gen
Characters: Peter/Harriet
Wordcount: 4800ish
Summary:
The Agricultural Show is in less than a month—and the three-time champion rabbit has just gone missing.

A Peter and Harriet adventure! It's such a warm and thoughtful fic, with some intense moments of suspense - really a feat for a story about a missing rabbit. Non-murder detective stories are truly my fave genre. Also. Peter and Harriet ;-; I love them

Happy new year! I only wrote one Yuletide story this year, but I had fun with it :)

Split Stitch (4125 words) for FitzKreiner
Fandom: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Rating: Teen
(Brief references to sex and violence)
Characters: Gawain/Lady Bertilak, Gawain/Bertilak de Hautdesert
Summary: The Lord and Lady Bertilak are friendly, hospitable, playful people. Gawain endeavors to keep up with them.

This is fic for the folktale, rather than the movie. Basically I took it, shook it up in a can with some gender stuff, and poured it back out again. Thanks so much to Dez for cheerleading and betaing when I was struggling with it!

I also received TWO fics:

Lair Actions (7490 words) by 20thcenturyvole
Fandom: Murderbot Diaries
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Murderbot, ART
Summary: I’m a magic clockwork zombie and nobody can tell me what to do.

Many Worlds, One Murderbot (1050 words) by 20thcenturyvole
Fandom: Murderbot Diaries
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Murderbot, ensemble
Summary: Five universes that Murderbot doesn't have to deal with.

Both of these are based on a very broad prompt I gave that boiled down to AUs PLEASE. Lair Actions is a really lovely fantasy AU and Many Worlds has 5 different AU ficlets - it's just so fun to see Murderbot causing problems in other contexts haha.

Yuletide!!

Happy New Year! I started writing fic in 2010 and also started doing Yuletide in 2010, so it's now been a decade :) Always one of my favorite things about December.

For Yuletide this year I was gifted this amazing fic:

How I Spent My Vacation Between Survey Missions (3727 words) by Satchelfoot
Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Murderbot (Murderbot Diaries), Asshole Research Transport (Murderbot Diaries)
Summary:What happens when ART reunites with Murderbot during another break between research survey missions? Media gets viewed, of course, but there might also be some bad news for more shady corporations.

It's a fun little adventure about two characters who were made by humans but don't entirely understand how humans think, trying to figure out how firendship works. I loved it!! It also looks like Satchelfoot maybe picked me up as a pinch hit, which I so so so appreciate. What a good Yuletide.

I wrote 11 fics, as usual - though I'm reconsidering this tradition a little, haha. Christmas Eve turned into a pretty late night for me. My main fic is:

Worthy of Attention (2563 words) for Xochiquetzl
Fandom: Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Gem of Sphene & Zeiat (Imperial Radch)
Characters: Gem of Sphene (Imperial Radch), Zeiat (Imperial Radch), Queter (Imperial Radch)
Summary: Sphene has a new captain. Ambassador Zeiat isn't sure what to think about that.

I struggled with this quite a bit and actually ended up writing half of a different plot before starting over, but I'm happy with what I ended up with :) This is, coincidentally, also a fic of two not-really human people trying to figure out how friendship works. This might be, uh, symptomatic of the whole Transformers thing that's been happening over here all year.

10 more fics under the cut: Gideon the Ninth, Nero Wolfe, lies about baseball, Hustlers, Inspector Chen, JSMN, Rivers of London, Matthew Swift, The Raven Tower, and Murderbot Diaries! )

I hope you also had fun, if you did Yuletide! And if you didn't, please feel free to ask me more about the exchange - it's my favorite fic event of the year, and I'm always happy to talk about it.

neveralarch: (Default)
This year I wrote 11 fics in either 9 or 10 fandoms, depending on how we count things. My main fic:

The Captain and the Shore (12385 words) for sophia_sol
Fandom: Suradanna and the Sea - Rebecca Fraimow
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: The Captain/Suradanna
Summary:
It takes a few decades to really get to know a person. Especially when they keep changing; especially when they're unsure of themselves.

Can I take a moment to recommend Suradanna and the Sea to you? It's free online, and a really lovely novella about two immortal women who orbit around each other while spending centuries doing their own things and taking care of their own business. It's refreshingly free of mortality angst, so of course I had to get my grubby little mortality-obsessed fingers all over it.

I was sophia_sol's Yuletide writer back in 2011 too, and getting assigned to them again felt like getting away with the perfect crime :) Really glad that we still have the same taste in niche fandoms!

10 more fics under the cut - Lackadaisy, What We Do in the Shadows, Matthew Swift, Imperial Radch & Provenance, Johannes Cabal, Dream Daddy, Nero Wolfe, and Rivers of London! )

I also haven't had ANY time to dive into the Yuletide archive this year (because...I've been reading too much Transformers fic...), so no recs this time but maybe some in the future. Hope it was a good one for everyone!

I've almost finished a draft of my Yuletide fic, so here's this nonsense.

The Square Peg

Inspector Rebus
Rating: adult
Characters: John Rebus/Malcolm Fox, Malcolm Fox/Siobhan Clarke, John Rebus/Deborah Quant, Siobhan Clarke/John Rebus
Wordcount: 9000ish
Summary: John Rebus, sex instructor.

A/N: Writing fic for a nonexistent fandom, in three steps:
1. I'm really enjoying these books. I'm so glad that Rebus and Clarke have a strong platonic relationship. I wish there was less of this Clarke/Fox nonsense, and that Rebus didn't accidentally have sex with every other woman he meets.
2. Wait, why isn't there a horde of explicit John Rebus fics on AO3? Where is my filthy 'John Rebus has sex with everyone' 50k opus?
3. Do I have to write it???

It's not the 50k opus of my heart, but here it is. I've been reading the books in no kind of order, but this is probably set somewhere between Even Dogs in the Wild (which I have read) and Rather Be the Devil (which I haven't).

Read it on the AO3!

This fic is part of my ongoing experiments in writing by voice memo. It takes approximately 3 hours of talking to write 9k of pwp (significantly faster than my typing average, although that involved 12 car rides of varying length). On the other hand, it took me almost exactly a month to get through transcribing and editing all of it.

A Harder Road
Johannes Cabal / Dead Souls
Rating: gen
Characters: Johannes Cabal, Horst Cabal, Manilov, Dead Souls ensemble
Wordcount: 18000ish
Summary: Johannes and Horst make a brief detour to Russia.

(A pastiche/fusion of Gogol's Dead Souls, set in the early chapters of Johannes Cabal: Necromancer. Will probably make minimal sense if you haven't read both books, but I encourage you to give it a try anyway.)

A/N: Tumblr user tweedymcgee made the observation that I'm writing for increasingly obscure book fandoms. I responded by becoming emotionally invested in a 19th century Russian classic.

Thanks to Nikolai Gogol, whose academic career has been an inspiration as I struggle my way through the last year of graduate school. I read the Donald Rayfield translation of Dead Souls, and use some of its phrasing here.

Dreamwidth is giving me fits with the link for an unknown reason, but you can read it on the AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/works/12634953

Philadelphia
Johannes Cabal
Rating: teen
Characters: Johannes & Horst Cabal, Carnival of Discord ensemble
Wordcount: 18000ish
Summary: Johannes' bet with Satan is going relatively well. Horst isn't enjoying himself. Johannes is learning to juggle. These observations aren't related, exactly, but Horst spent eight years with nothing to do but think and it's difficult to stop himself now.

A/N: Thanks to my brother, who has spent hours and hours with me dissecting the Cabal books in general and Horst in particular. A lot of the ideas in this fic came from our conversations, and I wouldn't have written it without the chance to rant at him. When it was done, of course, he was too busy with 'college' and 'work' to edit it for me. Huge huge thanks to thehorseofadifferentcolour who stepped in, read the whole thing like three times, and let me continue rambling about Horst indefinitely.

This fic is set during Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, and is not at all compliant with the later novels. The fic contains threats of violence toward both adults and children, actual violence toward adults, human and animal death, suicidal thoughts, soul stealing, vampirism, and a lot of sibling conflict. It's sort of a comedy. Please let me know if you need details before reading.

Read it on the AO3!

I started writing this right after I finished the first Johannes Cabal novel, so I just barely beat a year to completion, haha. Incidentally, writing this and also talking to a lot of people about siblings while I was writing this made me realize how weird and fundamental sibling relationships are. I just typed a long explanation of this, but it didn't make any sense and anyway I kind of do that in the fic, so. But I would just like to reiterate: weird.
neveralarch: (Default)
Beat Love Down
Aubrey-Maturin series
Rating: adult
(sex-pollen style explicit sex, and consequentially some (relatively light) consent issues. Also period-typical homophobia. Please let me know if you'd like details.)
Characters: Jack Aubrey/William Marshall, Stephen Maturin, James Dillon
Wordcount: 3700ish
Summary: In the heat of the battle Jack Aubrey did not feel the sting of what Stephen later told him would have been a very small stiletto.

A subtle French poison is making Jack feel things that are not appropriate for polite society, nor even for the often impolite society of his ship. This is either the best or the worst day of William Marshall's life.

A/N: I'm trying to clear a bunch of WIPs off my desktop and I found this, which I wrote by voice memo while driving cross-country almost exactly two years ago. I haven't read any O'Brian in also about two years, so let me apologize now for any errors in detail, dialogue, or tone. Otherwise I apologize for nothing, I read the first book and wanted a lake of Aubrey/Marshall to wallow in and AO3 totally let me down. Maybe there's a zine out there??

Read it on the AO3!

Hello hello! For those wondering, I did survive Yuletide and I DID write 11 fics. Which is... all of the fic I managed to post in 2016. So look forward to seeing an in-depth analysis of these fics in a couple days when I get my act together and do the year in review.

First, though, let's talk about the AMAZING fic I received:

Lapidary (3367 words) by Parhelion
Fandom: Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Archie Goodwin/Saul Panzer
Summary: Saul brings his hobby to work; Archie decides he wants both cake and pie.

Nero Wolfe novels sort of define my early-to-mid-teens, and I think I first decided that Yuletide was an amazing thing because there were three (three!!) Archie/Saul fics buried in their old archive website. It’s the wisecracking sappy professionals ship of my heart. And this fic Gets It and also has an amazing vision of the Nero Wolfe universe from Saul’s pov:

If you haven’t heard of Mr. Wolfe, he was the one Manhattan P.I. back in the thirties able to handle cases where the brother-in-law maybe did it with a silver spoon in the conservatory, but you had to have brain-power, out-talk a white-shoe lawyer, and win access to a Tiffany bracelet to prove it. I found such affairs to be nice little vacations. Mr. Wolfe, like most national monuments, was always something to see. Archie Goodwin, who was Mr. Wolfe’s associate in charge of bracelet-accessing, was a friend of mine.

Parhelion has written several Archie/Saul fics and they’re all great - I feel so lucky to have received this new one. Check it out!

(And also read the Nero Wolfe novels - I’ve already gotten a few friends hooked, you could be next.)

On to what I wrote:

Catch You When You Drop (6211 words) for perdiccas
Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Beverley Brook, Oxley (Rivers of London)
Summary:
Draft message to Peter Grant
look maybe i dont want to find myself in the country maybe i wanted to stay comfortable and happy in london maybe i wanted to keep fighting with the thames boys maybe it was kind of fun

Beverley right after the end of the first book, trying hard to adjust to being out of London and also get hot water in her caravan. As usual I just wish I had more time to rewrite this properly, but I am proud that I managed to conceive a reasonable amount of fic and write it in a reasonable amount of time, rather than Last Year. I even managed to get everything posted well before the deadline, although as usual I was surprised by how much trouble the AO3 servers have with Yuletide and ended up stressing out as I tried to get things posted through the 500 errors.

treat fics under the cut. More RoL, Discworld, Johannes Cabal, Baseball, Matthew Swift, and a couple small fandoms )

(Please give me Yuletide recs if you have any - I'm too overwhelmed to go diving, but I do love Yuletide and Yuletide fics and I want to read more than the three I've done so far.)

Only a couple days late. I just flew back to grad school land and immediately came down with a miserable cold that just graduated into a shivering fever :/ Time to do a Yuletide post, basically!

My main fic:

Just Like Ice on the Dune (26519 words) for sophiahelix
Baseball RPF, gen
Tim Lincecum & Hector Sanchez, Giants ensemble and special guest appearances from Adam LaRoche, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke
Summary: Tim is feeling good. At least, he's trying pretty hard.
(Or: the magical story of Tim Lincecum and Hector Sanchez's friendship.)

I nearly murdered myself with Yuletide this year, haha. I initially didn't have a clue for what to write, and then in mid-November I came up with a great idea that involved writing a fic over the entire 2014 MLB season. I finished the second (ie presentable) draft on the afternoon of the 21st and sent it to tumblr user inkstrangle who was super super nice and betaed for me on short notice. I got it back the evening of the 23rd and spent the 24th rewriting a ton of the dialogue and also the ending and also adding scenes... and then got surprised by the Yuletide archive actually opening on time for once. I actually finished editing the fic 2 hours after the archive opened, but fortunately sophiahelix was willing to wait a little while to look at her gift and it all seems to have worked out.

I really wish I had started earlier or had more time to work on it - I just finished doing a last round of edits tonight to correct some mistakes I noticed. It's not 100% the fic I envisioned. But I'm still really glad I wrote it. This has been a very tough sports year for me, and this fic was cathartic in a lot of ways and seems to have entertained, so it's at least mostly a success.

And I survived Yuletide! And still managed to write 10 more treat fics as usual, during that period between 2nd and 3rd main fic draft.

treat reveals under the cut )

Year-end fic round-up coming sometime this week! Now I'm going to go to bed before my brains leak out my ears.

FIC TAKES FOREVER TO POST. I had it coded. It was done. It still took me an hour and a half from blank AO3 to now.

The Bearing of a Scholar
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Rating: gen
Characters: Mr. Norrell, Childermass, ensemble.
Wordcount: 9000ish
Summary: "A man who cannot get to heaven in a green coat, will not find his way thither the sooner in a grey one." —Dr. Samuel Johnson
Or: A very important fic about Childermass fighting with Drawlight and Lascelles over what waistcoat Mr. Norrell should wear to the ball.
A/N: Thanks tremendously to cosmogyral for editing, character correction, and a really good suggestion about footnotes. And thanks to prodigy for linking me to how-to-footnote a while back and making the clicky numbers possible.

Read it on the AO3!

I finished another fic! This is Rivers of London fic I wrote really quickly in January, then sat on for 6 fricking months because I don't know anything about rugby. But it's done now! Enjoy this basically irredeemable rarepair pwp. With rugby.

Kick the Ball Dead
Rivers of London
Rating: adult
(alcohol, explicit sex, swearing, and a lot of boundary negotiation)
Characters: Frank Caffrey/Thomas Nightingale
Wordcount: 5600ish
Summary: Thomas tries to watch rugby, tries to have a nice night with Frank, tries to keep his dignity, and sort of succeeds. More or less. It's hard to do all three at once.
A/N: Set sometime in the Whispers Under Ground—Broken Homes range.

Read it on the AO3!

neveralarch: (Default)
I finished a fic!!!! It is for like... two people to read. Maybe three. But I've been meaning to write it for 1.5 years and now it exists!

Walk the Straight Road Alone
The Crossroads and the Gate - Imogen Calhoun
Rating: adult
(swearing, non-graphic violence, explicit sex, god problems, and a lot of stuff about consent - mostly trial-and-error negotiation)
Characters: Arruén/Venadan
Wordcount: 7100ish
Summary: Gods make endings difficult. Gods make everything difficult.
(Alright, Venadan makes things a little difficult too.)
A/N: This is a fanfic of The Crossroads and the Gate, which I love a lot and also have thought way too much about. I recommend reading that before you try to read this (also, I just recommend it in general).

Read it on the AO3!

I wrote this and three other fics by voice memo while driving across the country, which means that I have a weird first draft podfic. Dunno what I'll do with them, maybe some kind of process post. It was interesting, though! I've been reading about Dorothy Sayers and Margery Allingham and several other authors from around that time dictating their novels and my reaction was basically 'woah what how????' The writing technique that I've built up through constant word processor use tends to be very choppy and non-linear, and would drive a typist up the wall. But I was stuck in a car and my phone has a very good voice recorder, so I thought I'd give it a shot with some fics I've had kicking around for 1.5 years to a couple of days, (relatively) short fics that I had fully plotted out. I think it turned out well! Although I then put this fic through four drafts, haha, and I'm still catching typos now that I've posted. ...Let me know if you see anymore.

Heyyy, I am just cross-posting this Yuletide fic really quickly because someone on the AO3 asked me if I would post it to a Hornblower comm and it feels weird to do so without making it directly available on LJ/DW. So.

On Land and At Sea
Hornblower
Rating: adult
(Explicit sex)
Characters: William Bush/Horatio Hornblower/Barbara Wellesley
Wordcount: 8200ish
Summary: Hornblower introduces his captain to his wife. (A missing chapter from the beginning of Commodore Hornblower.)
A/N: Written for Yuletide 2014, for binz! Huge thanks to my beta aralias, who as usual made this way better than it was.

fic under the cut )

neveralarch: (Default)
I checked who my authors were as soon as they were revealed because I really wanted to know, haha. Not Like I Feint Every Time We Touch is by Aja, and VII. Lakeland is by livii (which I had kind of guessed). Very grateful to both of them, this was an awesome Yuletide :)

My main fic:

On Land and At Sea (8283 words) for binz
Hornblower - C. S. Forester, Adult
William Bush/Horatio Hornblower/Barbara Wellesley
Summary: Hornblower introduces his captain to his wife. (A missing chapter from the beginning of Commodore Hornblower.)

This was super last minute for me - I had to upload a finished but very rough draft for the deadline, then got aralias to do a last-minute beta for me, and edited and posted the final version on the 23rd/24th. But it did get finished, and I think it turned out pretty well :) It was a little weird to be writing sex stuff for Yuletide, but I am huge fan of binz (and shiplizard)'s kinky Hornblower fic, so as soon as I saw binz's prompts I wanted to write something along similar lines.

On the 22nd and 23rd I wrote a bunch of Madness fic (as usual), and all of those are under the cut.

Yooo, I have had a stressful/dead-line filled past few days, full of little sleep and a surprise mouse corpse in the sink. So I am doing this WIP meme! I am going to post favorite lines or SOMETHING from the... seven WIPs certainly sitting on my desktop waiting for me to survive the last week of term. It would be nine, but I can't mess with the Yuletide-related ones.

If you want to know more about any of the WIPs, just ask and I will happily babble. And feel free to take this chance and post your own WIP stuff, because I'm always interested to know what people are working on.

Update, June 2013: Dudes, I am super lazy about updating this, and AO3 is way more navigable than this mess of a list. If you want to find fic on my journal, the tagging system should have your back (or leave a comment and I will help you find the fic!).

Since fanfiction and fanart are basically the only things I post, here's a list. I realize you could just go through my tags, but I hate doing that on other people's journals, so why should I make anyone else?

List, list, list. )
neveralarch: (Default)
But first - my giftfic! Joanne_c wrote One Night In A Castle for me and I ADORE it and maybe you will love it too. It is Lion in Winter rpf. If you have not seen A Lion in Winter you should definitely see it. If you are not aware of the ridiculousness of the actors involved in the movie (including the late greats Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn) you should check that out also.

Here is what I wrote:

Team The Best Team (5715 words), for defcontwo
Elementary (TV), Teen. Marcus Bell/Ms. Hudson/Alfredo Llamosa, Joan Watson and Sherlock Holmes
Summary: Marcus gets along really well with Holmes' friends.

My assigned fic! I wrote it in like... four days, and lyryk was super awesome and beta'd it for me. It was a lot of fun to focus on the side-characters, and it was interesting to write reasonable, practical characters who can actually just decide to go on a date instead of having to angst about it forever, haha. Also I am glad I finally got a full-sized Elementary fic off the ground, I have three in my WIPs. (Aaaand this fills my M/F/M threesome square in my idfic bingo, because I can make yuletide work for me.)

And then I wrote my 10 treat-fics on the 23rd and 24th:

cut for scrolling purposes )

And that's the lot! Going to start replying to comments tomorrow, it might take a while. Hopefully I'll get some recs in soon-ish - I'm maybe half-way through the archive right now, so it'll probably be mid-January before I'm ready for recs.

zine fic

28/12/13 03:36 pm
neveralarch: (Default)
Two pieces of news!

I wrote a fic for [personal profile] holli's Discworld fanzine "The Turtle Moves" earlier this year, and I just posted it to the AO3. The whole zine (and other zines) can be downloaded free here, but here is the header info and link for my fic:

An Incomplete List
Discworld (The Truth)
Rating: g
Characters: Mrs. Cake, ensemble
Wordcount: 540ish
Summary: Being an incomplete list of the documents found in the 'Complaints and Comments' office of The Ankh-Morpork Times, after the disappearance of Mr. Timothy Bauer.

Doctor Who fans need not feel left out! I also wrote a fic about the Master's facial hair for the Katyzine, which can be downloaded here. I will post the fic separately eventually, but for now it is zine-exclusive. Check out the zine! It has amazing cover-art and many recipes and also 'recipes' and Star Trek with cats. Truly it is the best of zines.

neveralarch: (Default)
I have a longer post I want to make about podcasts and radio plays and my new love affair with Welcome to Nightvale, but in the meantime here is a cool thing: I am in a zine! A real paper-based thing!

[personal profile] holli has made five zines for Zinefest: four fandoms (Who, Pushing Daisies, Les Mis, Discworld) and a zine about how you found fandom. I have a short fic in the Discworld zine. It's about letters sent to the Ankh-Morpork Times, and you can read it by going to this link and downloading the pdf of the Discworld zine (which is labeled 'the turtle moves'). Or download all of the zines. They are great, and have great contributors - I know [personal profile] aralias is in two of them. I've only glanced at the other four zines, so I'm hoping to get time next week to sit down and actually read all of them. Something to look forward to!

I'm super enamored of the layout of the zines - I worked on student publications long enough to realize that I hate making layouts and typesetting, and holli did some awesome stuff with my fic to make it look more newspaper-y, which I would have never thought of. I'll post the fic here/on the AO3 eventually, but right now I am too busy admiring its pdf form.
