So I wrote this fic almost exactly a decade ago and never did any editing past the first draft despite receiving some really helpful beta notes because it seemed hard and I lost interest. The writing isn't polished, the set up is a thin excuse for kink, but my buddy Dez has convinced me to let it be free into the world because it's Fun haha. Enjoy!

The Adventure of the Forged Statues
Fandom: The Great Mouse Detective
Rating: adult
Characters: Basil/Ratigan
Wordcount: 9,700ish
Summary:
When Ratigan falls ill upon arrest, Basil takes it upon himself to nurse his nemesis back to health so that he can stand trial and be properly convicted of his many numerous crimes. Basil has no ulterior motives. Absolutely, positively none at all.

Yuletide!!

1/1/20 04:00 pm
neveralarch: (Default)
Happy New Year! I started writing fic in 2010 and also started doing Yuletide in 2010, so it's now been a decade :) Always one of my favorite things about December.

For Yuletide this year I was gifted this amazing fic:

How I Spent My Vacation Between Survey Missions (3727 words) by Satchelfoot
Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Murderbot (Murderbot Diaries), Asshole Research Transport (Murderbot Diaries)
Summary:What happens when ART reunites with Murderbot during another break between research survey missions? Media gets viewed, of course, but there might also be some bad news for more shady corporations.

It's a fun little adventure about two characters who were made by humans but don't entirely understand how humans think, trying to figure out how firendship works. I loved it!! It also looks like Satchelfoot maybe picked me up as a pinch hit, which I so so so appreciate. What a good Yuletide.

I wrote 11 fics, as usual - though I'm reconsidering this tradition a little, haha. Christmas Eve turned into a pretty late night for me. My main fic is:

Worthy of Attention (2563 words) for Xochiquetzl
Fandom: Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Gem of Sphene & Zeiat (Imperial Radch)
Characters: Gem of Sphene (Imperial Radch), Zeiat (Imperial Radch), Queter (Imperial Radch)
Summary: Sphene has a new captain. Ambassador Zeiat isn't sure what to think about that.

I struggled with this quite a bit and actually ended up writing half of a different plot before starting over, but I'm happy with what I ended up with :) This is, coincidentally, also a fic of two not-really human people trying to figure out how friendship works. This might be, uh, symptomatic of the whole Transformers thing that's been happening over here all year.

Expand10 more fics under the cut: Gideon the Ninth, Nero Wolfe, lies about baseball, Hustlers, Inspector Chen, JSMN, Rivers of London, Matthew Swift, The Raven Tower, and Murderbot Diaries! )

I hope you also had fun, if you did Yuletide! And if you didn't, please feel free to ask me more about the exchange - it's my favorite fic event of the year, and I'm always happy to talk about it.

Once again: 11 fics, this time in 11 fandoms. My main fic:

Every Sundown (10515 words) for Trismegistus
Fandom: Imperial Radch - Ann Leckie
Rating: Teen
Relationships: Seivarden/Breq
Summary:
Breq is a traitor, a rebel, and a captain a thousand years out of date. Mercy of Seivarden is drifting without a crew.

I'm always a little scared of writing Radch fic, but I love love love Breq and Seivarden's relationship! I got the idea right away to write a roleswap where Breq was the captain and Seivarden was the ship. I got really into it and ended up writing... too much. As usual it turned into a last minute panic to edit it, so thanks immensely to tweedymcgee for the beta help!

Expand10 more fics of varying length under the cut! Vantablack pigment feud, The Happytime Murders, Megalo Box, The Way of the House Husband, Rivers of London, Inspector Rebus, Dirk Gently (TV 2016), Squirrel Girl, Transformers: Shattered Glass, and Nero Wolfe )

Hope everyone had a good Yuletide!! And if you have recs they'd be super welcome, as usual I've been too busy to really dig through the archive.

Hello internet! I'm a doctor now! I brought you Deadpool porn (angst) (fix-it) (porn).

Just As Thick As My Skin
Fandom: Deadpool (movies)
Rating: adult
(Explicit sex, swearing, disturbing imagery, discussions of suicide and grief, and bad (but well-intentioned) consent practices. It's very silly. It's a Deadpool fic.)
Relationships: Vanessa/Wade, Wade/Cable, Vanessa/Wade/Cable
Wordcount: 6000ish
Summary:
Threesomes solve everything.

(Threesomes do not solve everything. But sometimes they're fun.)

This year I wrote 11 fics in either 9 or 10 fandoms, depending on how we count things. My main fic:

The Captain and the Shore (12385 words) for sophia_sol
Fandom: Suradanna and the Sea - Rebecca Fraimow
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: The Captain/Suradanna
Summary:
It takes a few decades to really get to know a person. Especially when they keep changing; especially when they're unsure of themselves.

Can I take a moment to recommend Suradanna and the Sea to you? It's free online, and a really lovely novella about two immortal women who orbit around each other while spending centuries doing their own things and taking care of their own business. It's refreshingly free of mortality angst, so of course I had to get my grubby little mortality-obsessed fingers all over it.

I was sophia_sol's Yuletide writer back in 2011 too, and getting assigned to them again felt like getting away with the perfect crime :) Really glad that we still have the same taste in niche fandoms!

Expand10 more fics under the cut - Lackadaisy, What We Do in the Shadows, Matthew Swift, Imperial Radch & Provenance, Johannes Cabal, Dream Daddy, Nero Wolfe, and Rivers of London! )

I also haven't had ANY time to dive into the Yuletide archive this year (because...I've been reading too much Transformers fic...), so no recs this time but maybe some in the future. Hope it was a good one for everyone!

Only a couple days late. I just flew back to grad school land and immediately came down with a miserable cold that just graduated into a shivering fever :/ Time to do a Yuletide post, basically!

My main fic:

Just Like Ice on the Dune (26519 words) for sophiahelix
Baseball RPF, gen
Tim Lincecum & Hector Sanchez, Giants ensemble and special guest appearances from Adam LaRoche, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke
Summary: Tim is feeling good. At least, he's trying pretty hard.
(Or: the magical story of Tim Lincecum and Hector Sanchez's friendship.)

I nearly murdered myself with Yuletide this year, haha. I initially didn't have a clue for what to write, and then in mid-November I came up with a great idea that involved writing a fic over the entire 2014 MLB season. I finished the second (ie presentable) draft on the afternoon of the 21st and sent it to tumblr user inkstrangle who was super super nice and betaed for me on short notice. I got it back the evening of the 23rd and spent the 24th rewriting a ton of the dialogue and also the ending and also adding scenes... and then got surprised by the Yuletide archive actually opening on time for once. I actually finished editing the fic 2 hours after the archive opened, but fortunately sophiahelix was willing to wait a little while to look at her gift and it all seems to have worked out.

I really wish I had started earlier or had more time to work on it - I just finished doing a last round of edits tonight to correct some mistakes I noticed. It's not 100% the fic I envisioned. But I'm still really glad I wrote it. This has been a very tough sports year for me, and this fic was cathartic in a lot of ways and seems to have entertained, so it's at least mostly a success.

And I survived Yuletide! And still managed to write 10 more treat fics as usual, during that period between 2nd and 3rd main fic draft.

Expandtreat reveals under the cut )

Year-end fic round-up coming sometime this week! Now I'm going to go to bed before my brains leak out my ears.

Hello, here is some Max/Furiosa tentacle porn. I wrote in the car last month by voice memo, and no one else will ever hear that recording.

Clutch to the Floor
Mad Max
Rating: adult
(explicit sex, swearing, brief description of a panic attack, some possible issues with fully-informed consent)
Characters: Max/Furiosa
Wordcount: 3000ish
Summary: Max knows he's dreaming.
A/N: Let me give you a short FAQ, in lieu of notes.
Q. Why did you write this?
A. I don't know. I don't know. Driving through Arkansas is pretty boring, I guess.

I have officially survived my big exam. I have probably passed? I won't know for a while, but unless I massively screwed up in some way I have no idea about, a fail is kind of unlikely.

Immediately after my exam I went for drinks, went to a baseball game, went home, slept in until noon, did errands on Saturday and then got drenched on my way to a fencing thing, went home and slept again, had people over today and fed people great stirfry. So I'm feeling like a success.

Although I totally blew off any and all work this weekend. I need to get on that.

(Also I told several people I would catch up on Who this weekend and IMMEDIATELY chickened out, haha. But I watched the Ace Attorney movie instead and did a brief tumblr review.)

Fencing-wise, things are going GREAT so far, maybe mostly because my competing has been minimal and my administrative/coaching things have been high. I had a great time at the ref seminar and learned a LOT, and I think we might have a full sabre team for the college competitions? SO EXCITED. I can't believe that I haven't fenced with a full women's team since Spring 2012, I miss it so much. (Someday I will post my rant about why mixed-gender fencing is both a good thing and a terrible thing for women in fencing, but for now I will save it for the people who have the misfortune to ask me about it in real life.)

Hello! Tomorrow I am driving back to grad school land where I will be doing mostly things that I've already been doing here, except with more in-personness and less Skype. Woo.

I've posted a couple things to tumblr lately, but I figured I'd cross-post the links here, at least!

First, I made Kate Beaton themed fanart for The Great Mouse Detective/Tricky and Wicked, Of Course, which you can see here. That link also has a rec for Tricky and Wicked, a Basil/Ratigan fic that I LOVE, you should def check it out.

Second, I got a tattoo! I wanted this exact tattoo when I graduated college 2.5 years ago, but I was convinced not to do it and spent all that time longing and now it has happened. It's a geeky stats tattoo, and I am half tempted to turn that shoulder into a blackboard-proxy now. Although it'll probably take we another 2.5 years to psych myself up for another tattoo.

Third, I got to visit tweedymcgee last week! It was really great and we did fencing things. In case you ever wonder if I am a person of just some sort of internet data-being, you can now ask tweedymcgee for verification.

I think that's it! Wish me luck for two days of driving.

Fanworks List

Update, June 2013: Dudes, I am super lazy about updating this, and AO3 is way more navigable than this mess of a list. If you want to find fic on my journal, the tagging system should have your back (or leave a comment and I will help you find the fic!).

Since fanfiction and fanart are basically the only things I post, here's a list. I realize you could just go through my tags, but I hate doing that on other people's journals, so why should I make anyone else?

1) Podfic.
susan_voight recorded a podfic of Team the Best Team (my Elementary OT3 fic)! It is here and it is excellent. I should have mentioned it foreeeeveer ago, but my memory is full of potholes. Definitely check this one out, I love susan_voight's delivery.

2) Remix.
It is remix time again! Someone remixed me! I'm so excited. Lost in the Fire is a remix of Continuing Care, which is a Who fic that I had completely forgotten existed. The remix is sort of a graceful and painful meditation on the Doctor's relationship/guilt complex/duality with the Master, and so I obviously I am super into it and I suspect a lot of my f-list will be too? Check it out, I'm already dying to know who wrote it.

3) Rec.
So I am going to a Red Sox game this week, and in preparation I watched Money Ball, because everyone keeps telling me to watch it. This is what happens when you hang out with statistics geeks. The movie was reasonably fun, but it left me with one of those yanking-in-my-chest character obsessions with Billy Beane. Idk, man, these things happen. I went off in search of fic, mostly without hope, but the internet came through for me. Oh, the internet came through. Front Offices is Theo Epstein/Billy Beane Baseball RPF. It's gorgeous, and heart-breaking, and I am going to read it at least fifteen more times this month. The writing is really excellent, the character arcs are believable and thoughtful, and man, this thing is funny. I promise you don't have to know anything about baseball to read it. Do you care about middle-aged dudes being assholes to each other and then making out and then having feelings and then making fun of each other? You will love this fic, I think.

I was chatting with a friend about baseball today, and impressed him with all of my sudden knowledge about the A's and the Red Sox's games in the early 2000s. Also knowing that the Dodgers used to play in Brooklyn, and being able to discuss Tim Lincecum's hair. I still have no idea how baseball is actually played.

These are happier things! Fandom-y things. Also slightly self-aggrandizing things, but whatever, I am fine with that.

One, I just discovered that I was recced on TVTropes. This makes me feel pretty good, not because I'm on the site, but because the troper picked my ridic Skyfall Elizabethan AU and it reminded me that I wrote a ridic Skyfall Elizabethan AU. Good times. Was that seriously only six months ago?

Two, that Hawkeye comic that astridv drew based on my story got recced on the Forbidden Planet International blog. I can claim little/no credit for the comic, but dude. Dude.

Three, I've signed up for the Doctor Who remix, and you should too! I miss the bigger remix challenge, but I wrote DW every year that I participated, so this won't be that different.

I think that's it? I don't want to spam three posts at you, haha. I'll call this it. (Especially since it took me forty minutes to post this, jeez. My internet is super spotty at the moment.)

First thing: I have been trying to do a personal tumblr again. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it, but I do enjoy looking at pictures. If we haven't connected on there yet, let me know your tumblr (mine is just neveralarch).

Second thing: I have been consuming media this summer! It's nice.

Still watching FMA! It is good, and keeps subverting my expectations, because I know how the story goes and IT'S NOT GOING THERE. Reserving final judgment until I finish the series - I'm at like episode 41 right now.

Next - I saw The Lion in Winter with my mom and brother, and OH MY GOD

Still dying of papers. Feeling a little less dying than before, though. About two weeks until I need to be out of here.

ANYWAY, I saw Iron Man 3 today and it was totally rad.

Basically, I saw this movie about 12 hours ago and spent the rest of the day doing a bunch of dry academic stuff and yet I am still capslocking and giggling about Iron Man 3. Do you want to talk about this movie? I am all about that. Talk about this movie with me.

This was basically done last summer, but I'm posting it now because I want it out of my wips folder! I would apologize for the delay, but no one was waiting for this! I feel like I should apologize for the fic in general, but I'm not going to! The heart wants what it wants.

Hypocrisy Was Our Text
James Bond (Skyfall) + 16th century RPF
Rating: teen
Characters/ships: minor James Bond/Raoul Silva, M (Judy Dench), Eve Moneypenny, Q (Whishaw), Bill Tanner
Wordcount: 11,400ish
Summary: When Andrew Bond and Monique Delacroix Bond die in 1572, they leave behind a small freehold, a large house, and a very small, very angry boy.
A retelling of Skyfall, as it might have happened in Elizabethan England.

A/N: This fic features examples of historical prejudice against Catholics, minor violence and torture, and canon character death. Please let me know if you need further details for your own self-care. Thanks to the fantastic foralllove for betaing!

This grew out of a not!fic prompt by narwhale_callin. At the time, I said that historical Bond was the prompt I was most likely to write a 300,000 word epic for, and I am proud of myself for keeping it down to under 12k. The not!fic contains massive spoilers for the actual fic, so I've linked it in the end-notes for the curious. If you care about how I've set about an Elizabethan version of Skyfall, read the rest of the notes below; if you just want to read the fic, skip to the end of the notes and just click the cut, you should be fine.

This fic is as historically accurate as I could make it, while the dialogue/narration is in the modern vernacular, more or less - I've avoided major anachronisms, but I'd rather it was readable instead of perfect. The story should be understandable without much knowledge of the late 16th century, though there are some conceits. Specifically, Bond-canon characters are subbing for or mixed with historical personages - here are some names/links, though you don't need to worry about this stuff if you're not interested. M is taking Robert Cecil's place, Q is heavily mixed with Anthony Bacon and has gained Bacon's limp and woeful outlook on life, and Silva borrows from incidents/attitude from both Christopher Marlowe and Edward Talbot. Bond is mixed with James Tipping, and Eve is mixed with Michael Moody, who are minor historical spies/thugs with no wiki pages. Tanner isn't historically anyone, except Rory Kinnear doing Shakespeare.

Okay, you made it to the end of the notes. You can read the fic now, sorry about that!

Year in review post coming presently, but here is a beta search! I feel like about half of my journal consists of beta searches. I used to ask for betas on lj comms, but as I move into new fandoms I'm less certain about where the activity centers are and tumblr doesn't work the same way. Also I don't trust strangers.

ANYWAY, looking for a James Bond/Skyfall beta. I have written an Elizabethan Skyfall AU, which I have managed to keep down to 11,000 words by dint of great effort. Rated teen for violence and death, minor Bond/Silva. Knowledge of the 16th century def not required - one of the reasons why I suspect this needs betaed is whether it's understandable to anyone not literally immersed in the renaissance. I would really appreciate it if anyone has time! No deadline, though I'd like to get this finished before I drive back to school on the 18th. Thanks :)

I got a treat fic! Someone wrote me By the Sword fic, which, I don't want to be hyperbolic here, but it is nearly the best thing that has happened to me so far. It looks like the person who wrote it watched BtS after reading my Yuletide letter, which is totally rad. I am spreading this gospel, guys.

Nonstarter, Danny Gallagher pov gen. Really interesting and intense, just like the movie. Check it out!

Saw the Hobbit yesterday, it was pretty good. Not struck by immense feelings about it. Anyway, back to my paper! One draft done, at least two sets of revisions to go.
