Only a couple days late. I just flew back to grad school land and immediately came down with a miserable cold that just graduated into a shivering fever :/ Time to do a Yuletide post, basically!

My main fic:

Just Like Ice on the Dune (26519 words) for sophiahelix
Baseball RPF, gen
Tim Lincecum & Hector Sanchez, Giants ensemble and special guest appearances from Adam LaRoche, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke
Summary: Tim is feeling good. At least, he's trying pretty hard.
(Or: the magical story of Tim Lincecum and Hector Sanchez's friendship.)

I nearly murdered myself with Yuletide this year, haha. I initially didn't have a clue for what to write, and then in mid-November I came up with a great idea that involved writing a fic over the entire 2014 MLB season. I finished the second (ie presentable) draft on the afternoon of the 21st and sent it to tumblr user inkstrangle who was super super nice and betaed for me on short notice. I got it back the evening of the 23rd and spent the 24th rewriting a ton of the dialogue and also the ending and also adding scenes... and then got surprised by the Yuletide archive actually opening on time for once. I actually finished editing the fic 2 hours after the archive opened, but fortunately sophiahelix was willing to wait a little while to look at her gift and it all seems to have worked out.

I really wish I had started earlier or had more time to work on it - I just finished doing a last round of edits tonight to correct some mistakes I noticed. It's not 100% the fic I envisioned. But I'm still really glad I wrote it. This has been a very tough sports year for me, and this fic was cathartic in a lot of ways and seems to have entertained, so it's at least mostly a success.

And I survived Yuletide! And still managed to write 10 more treat fics as usual, during that period between 2nd and 3rd main fic draft.

The Best at What He Does (706 words) for atlanticslide
Baseball RPF, gen
Dan Uggla and Nationals ensemble
Summary: ...and what he does is give hugs.

I am in baseball so deep. Like, to the point that I will ignore my natural hug aversion to write about Dan Uggla giving his teammates hugs. This is a real thing he does. His nickname is Huggla.

Rare Gems (494 words) for masterofmidgets
Escort Mission -, pg
Summary: L33t was dominating Street Fighter. Or, he would be dominating Street Fighter if his roommate wasn't the most distracting man in the world.

I really enjoy Cracked's Escort Mission series, and the voices came super easy. Also, I know so many people who are terrible at videogames that that part also came easy.

Monomyth (776 words) for dancinbutterfly
Cracked: After Hours, pg
Soren Bowie/Katie Willert, Michael Swaim, Daniel O'Brien
Summary: This date with Soren is going to be great. Katie won't let anything distract her.

Really an excuse to mention Jupiter Ascending and Sharktopus in the same film analysis. No regrets. Also, I have strong opinions about Joseph Campbell and no opinions about any other literary analysis.

Got Your Things Together (308 words) for omphale23
Beat the Champ - The Mountain Goats (Album), gen
Summary: On Tuesday, Mark got bit by what he thought was a rabid dog. On Wednesday, Mark realized that it wasn't.

Beat the Champ hit me hard when it was released, and Werewolf Gimmick is my... third favorite song? All of them are my favorites. This fic doesn't seem to have made much of an impression, but I liked writing it a lot.

Storied Career (381 words) for fairy_tale_echo
Spy (2015), pg
Susan Cooper/Rick Ford
Summary: Susan suffers the worst possible fate.

I love Spy and I love this pairing. Right after I saw the movie I plotted out this huge fic that I'll never actually write - this is basically a short version of that which gets right to the point.

Take a Break (305 words) for cadenzamuse
Check Please! gen
Larissa "Lardo" Duan & Shitty Knight
Summary: The hockey rink is dark and empty, but Lardo has the keys.

Check Please! is a super fun hockey webcomic that centers on huge amounts of UST between an out gay college player and his team captain, but it also has great side characters like Lardo and her best friend Shitty. I didn't think I would ever write for this fandom because I'm entirely in it for the canon, but Yuletide is as Yuletide does.

And in Trying, Become (610 words) for betony
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke, gen
Arabella Strange/Jonathan Strange
Summary: Jonathan tries. Oh God, does he try.

I am so proud of this title and summary. It makes up for having completely given up on the title and summary for my main fic.

Lesson One (283 words) for kay_obsessive
Lackadaisy, gen
Ivy Pepper & Viktor Vasko
Summary: Ivy keeps asking questions, and Viktor keeps answering them.

Writing Lackadaisy fic is super comfortable, and I can't believe I haven't written Ivy and Viktor before. I love them so much.

Variety (453 words) for jedishampoo
Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch, gen
Peter Grant & Molly
Summary: Peter and Molly renegotiate, via television and the prospect of cake.

It occurred to me after writing all of these fics that this, Lesson One, Take a Break, and Storied Career form a little pattern of 'female character does something - male character tries not to be too worried about it.' I think it's interesting how they all take off from that basis into something slightly different. Anyway, the most important part of this fic is that I remembered that they mostly have sofas in England instead of couches

Lifehack (429 words) for dsudis
The Martian (2015), gen
Mark Watney, Melissa Lewis
Summary: Mark enjoys finding interesting solutions to everyday problems. Even if he doesn't really need to.

Far and away my most popular fic of Yuletide. Probably because it's attached to a popular movie? But I'm proud of the basic fic concept :)

Year-end fic round-up coming sometime this week! Now I'm going to go to bed before my brains leak out my ears.
