A Very Average AO3 Stats meme

aralias (who I saw doing it) and
thisbluespirit (who invented it)! Also I added median fics, because means are less useful as a measure of centrality when data includes severe outliers (citation needed).
Out of 214 works on AO3...
Average word count: 3226
Average hits count: 1254
Average Kudos count: 100
Average no. of comment threads: 8
Average no. of Bookmarks: 23
Everything is reeeeally pulled up by Life of Crime (which just passed 30k hits), so here are the medians:
Median word count: 1067
Median hits count: 593
Median Kudos count: 38
Median no. of comment threads: 4
Median no. of Bookmarks: 4
Work(s) closest to the average word count:
The End of the Over (3254 words), which I always think is the fic about the Doctor and the Master playing space cricket, but which is in fact about Five being annoyed because the Master has been having decadent/angsty orgies with a harem of blonde people in sweaters.
This was a kinkmeme fic, because of course it was, but it's... hm. I feel conflicted about it because I don't actually enjoy reading it anymore (so much awkward sexual tension and angst) but I can also exactly imagine the Megatron/Starscream fic I would write with the same plot. Obviously it has staying power! Besides being exactly the right length.
The median fic is Keep Your Head Down, which is Michael Buble Being Stalked by a Velociraptor fic. I love Yuletide. It also makes sense that my median fic is a Yuletide fic, because 8 years of Yuletide * 11 fics a year = almost (though not quite) half of my total fic output.
Work(s) closest to the average hit count:
The FCC Won't Let Me Be (Radio Edit Version) (1250 hits) which is, in fact, a podfic. A collaborative Welcome to Night Vale podfic! I have very few podfics in my works count, and fewer where I actually contributed (sometimes people list me as a coauthor on podifc when actually I was just the source material). Very excited to have this as my average fic. When einzwitterion got married I flew out to be at her wedding, and her husband's only exposure to me before seeing me at the rehearsal reception was listening to the 30 seconds of swearing that einzwitterion clipped from this fic during the editing process.
The median fic is Rare Gems. Again, a Yuletide fic. I'm sensing a pattern here. This is also an Escort Mission fic about playing Pokemon, so it's very close to my heart. I miss Escort Mission and all of the Cracked.com webseries ;-;
Work(s) closest to the average no of comments (/+ kudos if too many):
Five fics with 8 comment threads, so adding in kudos...
And Look at Them (8 threads, 120 kudos). Teen Wolf packfic about buying leather jackets, apparently written for a no-Sterek comment meme? I have no recollection of writing it, tho I do remember it existing. It went by in a whirl, much like my brief obsession with Teen Wolf.
The median fic is Read Aloud, which is median on both comments (4 threads) and kudos (38). This is another(!) Yuletide fic, this time about Donna from Parks and Rec doing stand up comedy by reading the phonebook aloud. It was a (kind of) crack prompt. There's always one fic in the Yuletide batch that I think isn't as good as the idea promised to be, and this was the one in 2012 - but somebody podficced it, so it landed with them I guess!
Work(s) closest to the average no of comments and bookmarks:
And Look at Them again (21 bookmarks). I do feel that this is a very average fic for me, although I clearly had no idea where you should buy leather jackets. This fic should've been about them fieldtripping to 16 different Goodwills trying to find something that would fit.
Median: Read Aloud again (4 bookmarks). The perfectly median fic! It's a little too short and doesn't have enough hits to be perfectly median, but its wordcount (593) is exactly the same as the median hitcount, so.
Work(s) closest to the average no of kudos (/+ bookmarks):
There was a tie here, so the winner by kudos and bookmarks is At Land and At Sea (98 kudos, 16 bookmarks)! A Yuletide Hornblower threesome fic, which is...very average for me. I'm proud of it mostly because despite many many outlines and attempts, it's still the only real Hornblower fic I've ever managed to write. (There's also a Hornblower TV/Doctor Who crossover, but that kind of thing hardly counts.) This is also the fic that made me kind of tolerate Hornblower instead of being mad at him all the time :)
The median fic is Read Aloud AGAIN, but let us talk about Taping (38 kudos, 5 bookmarks) instead. It's another Yuletide fic, but this time about Peter Capaldi and Craig Ferguson hanging out after taping an interview. I'm still very excited that we got Doctor Capaldi, and I miss the Late Late Show a lot. Good memories!
Anyway, we have learned that I write too much for Yuletide. Actually, I feel like I already knew that. I have learned nothing. Except that Read Aloud is TOO CENTRAL. But it was fun to play with statistics!

Date: 2018-08-20 02:51 am (UTC)I'm now writing this weird Transformers fencing AU which definitely shares an energy with my By the Sword fic, and I feel like when the Transformers AU is done I should tell people to go back and read the BtS fic if they need more fencing.
Yuletide used to be a smaller percentage of my fic - I'm too lazy to work this out right now, but I think it started taking over more in 2015 and 2016 when I didn't have much energy for fic but I was still determined to do the Yuletide thing. A fun version of this meme would be to figure out what your 'average' fic was for each year - I feel like mine would be pretty different each year (after the initial Who phase), and yours would be stable for several years at a time and then veer off into another fandom.
