fanmix: The Man Made of Guns

So I've spent a lot of time in cars recently, and also I have spent a lot of time thinking about Skyfall. (Seriously, it's ridiculous, when I got to the point where my grad school reading was making me think about Q/Bond/Moneypenny I knew it had gone too far, but, come on, "a man can't argue on his knees," wtf else was I supposed to think about.)
ANYWAY, the combination of listening to lots of music and thinking about Skyfall induced me to do this FST. It's about the movie generally, and could totally also be read as M/Silva, M/Bond, and Bond/Silva. It's also overdramatic and has music I picked up when I was 13, and it just shouldn't be taken seriously. At all.
I was giggling to myself as I put this together, okay.

On 8tracks | Download
Since 8tracks shuffles the order of the mix and can generally be kind of a pain, I would recommend downloading.
Liner notes:
01| The Man Made of Guns - Kris Straub
[James Bond]
He's the man made of guns
and he's sorry he's late for the party
He's the man made of guns
gonna shoot you with his body
02| Safe Travels (Don't Die) - Lisa Hannigan
[M]
Please eat your greens
and don’t sit close to screens,
your eyes are a means to an end.
And I would be sorry if, due to your hurry,
you were hit by a lorry my friend.
03| The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
[Silva]
There's a man goin' 'round takin' names,
And he decides who to free and who to blame.
Everybody won't be treated all the same,
There'll be a golden ladder reachin' down.
When the man comes around.
04| The Cat and Mouse - Cursive
[Silva and Bond]
Some scars heal and practically fade away
While some reveal a past you can't escape
And others still are entirely fake
05| The Queen's Rebuke - The Decemberists
[M and Silva, M and Bond]
And he was a baby, abandoned, entombed in a cradle of clay
And I was the soul who took pity and stole him away
06| Every You Every Me - Placebo
[Silva and M]
In the shape of things to come.
Too much poison come undone.
Cuz there's nothing else to do,
Every me and every you.
07| Hypnotist of Ladies - They Might Be Giants
[Bond]
He's a hypnotist, hypnotist of ladies
Never had a pocket watch, never counted backwards
You won't remember why you liked him
You won't remember why you liked him
08| Babes - Icky Blossoms
[Bond Girls]
Babes, with four-inch heels, air-brushed nails,
at the club, killer babes
back and forth, on the stage, couldn't keep my eyes off
they're killer babes
09| I'm Slowly Turning Into You - The White Stripes
[Bond and Silva]
Yesterday it hit me that I do all the little things
That you do
Except the same little things that you do are annoying
They're annoying as hell in fact
10| Top of the World - The All-American Rejects
[Silva and M]
It's slowly filling upward.
You can stand but you have no ground.
I hear it from the lost words.
They say it's time that you lost your crown.
11| All Your Kayfabe Friends - Los Campesinos!
[Silva and M]
As the bus pulls away, I stare at the last field
Before we hit the city, that emotional minefield
I seduced your ex-boyfriend, to help you get over him
You found him more attractive, it helped you get over me
12| Let's All Die - Jack Penate
[Silva and M (and everyone else who dies in this movie)]
I don't really know what I'm doing with mixes (this was a fun experiment), so if you have comments or concrit, both would be appreciated!

Date: 2012-11-26 10:55 pm (UTC)First of all: I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this oh wow. Some of these songs are just so UNUTTERABLY PERFECT I can't even.
My concrit is entirely from the technical side. So this morning after downloading I hastily stuffed this onto my ipod and ran out the door to catch my bus, and discovered en route to work that for some reason, even though you'd labeled the songs as all being from the same album, my iPod decided that each song was actually part of a separate album, all titled the same thing, which put a damper on listening to the songs in the order you'd intended.
Upon coming home, I see the songs are successfully all recognized as one album on my computer, but they are not organized in the order you intended.
UNFORTUNATELY I know nothing of the technical side so I don't know how you might stop this happening in the future.
I know that some fanmixers, though, make the songs a playlist instead of an album -- which I actually like, because it means I get to retain the name of the actual album the songs were from. Of course, I don't know how you go about doing this in a useful way either!
(I'm sorry, I'm so unhelpful. :P)

Date: 2012-11-27 03:54 pm (UTC)I don't use iTunes or an iPod, so I don't really have the technical knowledge to fix this! Before uploading, I had gone in and edited the mp3s meta-data/tags, which should have kept them in order and in the same album. I'm not sure why your iPod or computer would have changed it. I'm also not sure how to make a playlist that would function on an iPod, since my mp3 player interacts with playlists differently...
Something to work on in the future! It doesn't REALLY matter what order you listen to the songs in, I had just put them this way to make the song changes less dissonant. I'm glad to hear that the song choices worked for you, though! I had a lot of fun putting this together, and it's good to know someone else got something out of it too :)

Date: 2012-11-28 11:52 pm (UTC)At any rate, I do think that preserving the order is important, because you DID put them this way for a reason! It is part of your ART! And you were successful at it. :)
I have been listening to this mix A LOT the last couple days, and enjoying the heck out of it. I'm definitely glad you decided to make it! SO MANY AMAZING SONGS, so many songs that are way too perfect for Skyfall!

Date: 2012-11-29 08:01 pm (UTC)And I'm really glad you're continuing to enjoy :) I listen to a lot of music in general, and making this fanmix was surprisingly easy - usually I have one or two songs I associate with a fandom, but I don't try to build anything off of them. I definitely will try this again next time, instead of just listening to the same song on repeat and not doing anything with it, haha.
