I did a remix! I realize author reveals were a little while ago, but I'm getting around to it now, haha.
Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Doctor Who
Rating: gen
(no warnings)
Characters: Seven, Ace, and a bunch of Doctors and companions.
Wordcount: 6,000ish
Summary: “How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
A/N: Written for Remix Redux 10, for roachpatrol. A remix of Ad Astra Per Anatis, which is fascinating and people should read. Betaed by aralias, who is an excellent person who puts up with my remix-instigated Ace fixation.
(Link to the fic on the AO3)
It was fun remixing roachpatrol! I've been following her writing for about... two years? Three? Regardless, I'm familiar, so it was more about picking apart the thoughts I already had, rather than working out something new. I did have to do some rewriting, and ended up getting uncomfortably close to the deadline, but I think it all worked out well.
I don't have much to say about the writing process this time around - it was pretty straight-forward. Ad Astra Per Anatis was the only fic I got really interested in remixing, and I worked out my plan pretty quickly. I did write quick remix drabbles, but only two really had anything behind them.
Here's the Ad Astra Per Anatis drabble, which I ended up using not at all:
The Tardis is broken.
The Doctor pulls in a breath, buries his arms in the mud. There's always something wrong with the TARDIS, but she is his and he cannot let her go.
The mud lets the duck free, with a slurp. Another piece of metal to fix, another emerging life stopped by defects in the machine.
There's a pile of copper alloy in a room in the TARDIS, but when the Doctor went looking, this is what he found.
The TARDIS is broken.
And the only other one that I thought was interesting, for Operation Cuckoo:
Jeffery's been working at Torchwood for five years, ever since he got out of medical school. He always knew it was around - Gran worked there, way back when, and Mum hadn't made much of a secret out the family history, even if she was in UNIT.
It's a great job.
Mary-ann agrees, even if she's a superintelligent ultrasound.
(It was going to be a fic about the life of a Torchwood medic, and it was going to be silly, and I still kind of want to write it, except I'm not sure if I could get through writing even ridiculous body horror =/.)
So, yeah! It was fun, even if I ended up scraping against the deadline this year. Will definitely try to do it next year.
