Did a Doctor/Master drawing for the best_enemies audio challenge based off of a scene in the AU audio Sympathy for the Devil. Large (worksafe) images and me babbling about buses under the cut.

Also posted here.

So, that's the finished product, all inked even though I hate inking. It's from the Master's speech in Sympathy for the Devil, which is basically the saddest thing I've ever heard any of the Masters say. The Doctor, who's just arrived in Hong Kong 1997 from his second regeneration, gets into an argument with the Master (who's been there since '77) about interference, stemming from the Master working for the Communist government in China. The Master says the Doctor only helps the 'right' sort of people, the Doctor says that he does what he can.

Master: "Chairman Mao spoke so highly of you, you know."

Doctor: "When I knew him, he was a librarian."

M: "You could have stopped him! You let entire cultures, entire races die!"

D: "That's not fair!"
...

M: "Where were you, during the plastic purges? What a shame, you weren't able to put your diplomacy to use on probe 7."

D: "I don't know what you mean."

M: "Of course you don't! That's why there's a line of mile-wide craters across America! I had to live through it all! The chaos! The panic! The shortages! ...I didn't see you at My Lai, Doctor, I didn't see you at East Timor. No interfering in Rwanda, I see. ...Pol Pot killed every doctor he could find, and none of them was you. I've been stuck on this miserable planet for 20 years, and I've done everything in my power to attract your attention. Where were you when the tanks rolled in in Tienanmen Square-"

I was listening to this on a long bus ride on the 11th around midnight, half-asleep, and I got this strong image of the Master seizing the Doctor's lapels, trying to force him to understand. So I drew it.

Still interested? Sketches further on:

I used a lot of references for this drawing, especially for the pose, though I adapted pretty freely. Mark Gatiss, plays the Master (brilliantly, honestly, I love his Master voice) so I did several sketches of him, trying to get a feel for his face/build.

More drawings of Gatiss, and a couple of Pertwee now. Reference for the Third Doctor is mostly from the Doctor Who: The Time-Travelers Guide by Peter Haining, which I bought myself at a used bookstore as a birthday present while I was working on this drawing.

Last drawing of Pertwee, and a sketch for the sketch of the final drawing...

And there's the sketch. Which I like better than the inks, unfortunately. I'm glad I used a lightbox rather than inking straight over the sketch.

So, it took me about two weeks from idea to finished inked drawing. Not bad, I guess?
