Life: update

This weekend has been super busy, except for today, when I just kind of melted into my bed at some point. I disapprove of the current heat about as strongly as I disapprove of the forecasted rain for this week. June :|

Anyway, I went to Munich yesterday! And it was amazing, so amazing, I love it. People kept telling me about the bars to go to and so on, but because I am me I went to six museums and climbed to the top of Old Saint Peter and walked way too much. Also, I was awake and moving for around 22 hours, between getting up at 3am to catch my train and finally making it back to my apartment at 1 am. The last few hours of that trip were a little surreal. Definitely affected my ability to move and be a person today, I have no idea if DS9 chat noticed the difference. I did manage to submit my entry for the second Machine of Death anthology, so there's that.

Also, a couple weeks ago, I finished Tristam Shandy. And it was amazing, so amazing, I love it. It's such a weird book - probably not one I would have read, if it hadn't been one of the few English-language books at the local library. But it was silly and fascinating, and people who have talked to me/read my fic may have noticed that I have a weakness for shaggy dog stories. Tristam Shandy is the ultimate shaggy dog story, the best kind, the kind where you know that's it's not going to go anywhere but you've given up on caring and can just enjoy the ride. Anyway, there's a movie based on Tristam Shandy which I've now seen - A Cock and Bull Story. This movie was amazing, so ama- okay, I'll stop. But it is really good, though I'm not sure what people who haven't read the book thought of it. I, flush with my knowledge of canon, was literally crying with laughter at the end. It has Stephen Fry, Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Dylan Moran, Gillian Anderson and more, all of them playing themselves as well as characters in Tristam Shandy. How was this ridiculous meta thing something that was made?

Finally, I've been reading Camera Obscura in a desperate attempt to familiarize myself with Anji and Fitz. I guess Lloyd Rose's crush on Paul McGann is fairly well-known, but I was still surprised. How many times can you mention the Doctor's hair/face/general aura of handsomeness in a chapter? Lots.

Okay, off to watch the new episode. I'm excited for being able to look at my flist and facebook and reality again without being spoilered.

it's a shame lloyd rose ruined it for me by turning up and being a bit sad to find me mocking her, because i still think this post (http://aralias.livejournal.com/496433.html#cutid1) is pretty funny.

also tristram shandy hurt my brain so much i doubted i would ever recover and had to stop reading it at, like, page 5...

Oh, jeez. That is funny, even with Lloyd Rose showing up and being all "aw, but I like your fanfic." It's always weird to see creators talking with fandom - I've noticed it happen more often and more directly with Doctor Who and especially BFAs and EDAs than in other fandoms. (Possibly because it's so old and at some point most of the people involved were fans? I don't know.)

I feel like reading Tristam Shandy may be somewhat similar to interacting with me, except in the eighteenth century. I hope that I'm wrong and just over-identifying, or at least that I haven't made your brain hurt as much.

interacting with you was certainly (a bit) confusing, but i seem to remember a lot more content for the confusion than i got for tristram shandy.

and also, yes, with the professionals and the fans - which i think is a bit to do with there being a lot of those guys out there (professionals, that is), and most of them at this stage after 50 odd years of it coming to professional work as fans, so they're still fans, or they were massive crazy fans before hand. so i sort of feel like it's more ok to do fan stuff, which is all right, and also sort of a bit worried because obviously it's so easy to be caught out and accidentally say something wrong that someone will see.

Tristam Shandy is not much about the content, true. narwhale_callin has reminded me that toward the end you get told to just draw your own love interest instead of making the author bother describing her, which is about as low content as you can get until you get to the chapters which are just blank pages.

I feel that if I ever become involved in something I was a fan of, I would totally look around to see what the fandom was saying. It would be a bit weird and creepy, but I wouldn't be able to resist.

You and I apparently have similar travel minds. People always rave about the nightlife/party hops/shopping, but I'm like, "NO. ALL THE MUSEUMS AND OLD BUILDINGS!"

You and my former English professor would get along quite well. His favorite book is Tristram Shandy, and he's read it about five times.
Me, on the other hand, well...

Man, I figure if I want to drink, there are about twenty good bars within walking distance of me. Munich is five hours away. I need a better reason to go. (Ditto on the shopping, though I will admit to having bought a hat.)

Uncle Toby is the best :D Just, just all of him. The best. Widow Wadman is also awesome! I think I am requesting Tristam Shandy for Yuletide, I cannot deal with the complete lack of fic.

I think the thing I liked best about Widow Wadman was that we were given a blank page where we could draw her how we wanted. Oh, Mr. Sterne, you silly silly thing.

Ooh, I've been intending to read Tristam Shandy for years, ever since I first heard of it. I think I need to bump it up in terms of reading priorities!

Well, I enjoyed it! It is 600 pages long, but I found it consistently entertaining (though the language is sometimes a pain - I just sort of let the eighteenth-centuryness wash over me instead of getting too worried about complete comprehension).

Aha, you have reminded me that I completely stalled out on Camera Obscura since last week. I should get back to that. But Anji is way more awesome than I was led to expect, and now I want to know why she doesn't have a million fics for me to read about her. (Fitz too, except he's slightly more popular, as book canon characters get, I think.)
