The Master does seem to be a little stuck in canon. Or, rather, he seems to be losing bits of character rather than gaining them. I think it makes sense in context of what he's gone through, but it definitely makes him less interesting to write if you just stick to that.
I'd also have liked to have done more with Colonel Blood before the Doctor's appearance, but that would have made for a much much longer or involved story than I could write right now. It's also surprisingly hard to get a handle on a Master without a Doctor - probably because so much of his character seems dependent on him.
