so, this is a bit of a surprise, probably. many months after you posted it, i thought - why didn't i read that one? a similar thing happened with 'cold comfort for change', which i loved after i eventually read it, but which i just didn't read for ages. why not? i don't know. i don't know (all these pre 80s doctors... and long fics maybe. i don't think it was that. i am just absent minded). and yet, as with that i am happy that i waited, because i am rubbish with not knowing what happened, and i was like - READSOFASTYAYOMGYAYTHISISAWESOME.
in short, i liked it a lot. a lot, a lot, a lot.
in long - i really liked all the details about the master's family on earth (and how it does feel like he's been here for ages, hatching plots that ALL FAILED, oh master, it is so sad how rubbish you are, but the doctor for some reason doesn't think you are rubbish, so that is very cute). i love his wife, who is someone it's sort of cool for him to be with, and who listens at doors and wasn't really fooled by his death, and i LOVED thomas's 'i might not be his son!' comment, and the master going 'argh, don't say that'. and all the little details. i just thought of the bit where thomas has regenerated, as a sort of random comment. the whole universe feels very real and well populated, which is excellent. i love that.
i also thought it was consistently hilarious (jamie talking to the eel and trying to tell people the future, other potential highlights), and the seemless way it blended in with the war games, and the way the war chief didn't diminish the master, but just made him seem cooler (even as he was failing EVERYTHING).
lots of fun, very sweet. i enjoyed it a lot. thank you for writing it.
