I guess it depends? On the one hand, I definitely support writing about things you haven't personally done, because otherwise I'd have to stop reading things that weren't autobiographies. Also, lots of times I actually do find written sword fights to be really good. On the other hand, fencing is so much weirder and more structured than normal sword fighting that I think it would be really hard to write without some experience at least watching the sport. Like how I would never try to write about a cricket game. I don't know.
(The next two paragraphs here have nothing to do with what you were asking, sorry. I though I'd just go back and warn you before the tl;dr happened.)
Having looked at my prompt, though, I have come to the conclusion that what I really want is a weird Doctor Who/By the Sword fusion. Like, without all of the By the Sword bits, because it sounds like an awful movie which apparently ends with a climactic duel between the arrogant and underhanded fencing coach (Roberts) and the ex-con with a heart of gold who killed his father in an earlier duel (some other guy). What.
ANYWAY, I now want Roberts!Master as a competitive fencer and Eight as the sports journalist who has been condemned to covering fencing and who knows that his career is probably all but over. Roberts!Master would have to explain all the rules to a completely confused Eight. There would be lots of snide comments about sabre fencers with their hacking and slashing and no point control, and epee fencers who do nothing but bounce up and down and miss each others feet (because Roberts would totally fence foil). Also, Five would be the major rival, and eventually Eight has to learn how to fence in order to duel Five for Roberts!Master's love. Or something. I think the reason I prompted Three/Roberts!Master instead of this is because I already know that I'm the only person who would write/read this idea.
